Synergistic Complications I have been described as smart, good looking, artistic, playful, creative, witty, caring, compassionate, intuitive, spiritual, fun to be around and often times handy with a hammer and saw. However, some number of years ago, the person I was in a committed relationship with failed to tell me she had HSV2. So now I have it as well.
It's inconvenient, but that's about it. It's not fatal. It's not degenerative. But it's also not curable.
That pretty much put an end to any hopes and dreams I might have ever entertained of being in another relationship.
That's not self pity talking - that's just realism. I've not, and I would never think of infecting another with this virus.

Where there used to be magic in my touch, these days, I don't touch anyone, ever. I feel toxic and I keep my hands in my pockets.
I never realized before how just making eye contact was an event and a reason for celebration. Now, I look away for fear that anyone gazing in might react in horror if they saw how deep, dark and lonely it is in here.
Self imposed or not, it is an exile. I don't have to wear an ankle monitor. I don't have to report to anyone. I don't have to sport a tattoo or patch to let others know I'm an undesirable, but still, it is an exile and I never knew before how incredibly lonely it can be in a crowd of people. Now, that's a loneliness I knows each and every day, for weeks, months and years.

"Making the best of what you have" and "You don't know what you've got til it's gone" are more than worn out cliches once what you've had IS gone.
I feel like I've been robbed, but unlike a car, a computer or a TV, what was taken from me was infinitely more valuable and can never be replaced. No amount of money or medical treatment will ever restore what I've lost.

So, is there a moral to the story? Well duh? I can think of about a hundred. The list would probably start off with:

Don't take the magic you share with another person for granted. Sometimes the grass isn't greener. Sometime the drought lasts forever and the grass will never be green.
Sometimes it is better to think with your head first. Think of your future. Think of the risks. Think of practical numbers. The stats say one in four to one in five of us is walking around with HSV. Some of us don't even know it. Maybe when your head is satisfied with the answers, you can let your heart do the thinking.
Use protection ALWAYS.
Let your kids and loved ones know about the dangers of STDs BEFORE they have to face this, or something even worse.
